One More Head Planter Post

Joy's Head Planters

Just ran across a blog post about these head planters that someone saw on Secrets from a Stylist on HGTV.  They were seen on the show Oh Joy! by Joy Deangdeelert Cho  and they are $300.00  ($150 each).

More reason for me to learn to make them!!!!

More Information on Building Head Planters

This article offers some good tips and steps. It shows how to build up your "mold" using pieces of Styrofoam, and say to cover it with two layers of chicken wire. I saw somewhere else that hardware cloth was better. I think I'll try that--might be more pliable.  The article tells what tools you'll need as well.  Can't wait to get started, hopefully next week!

A Journey: Making My Own Head Planters with Hypertufa

I found a great blog to help me in my garden:  http://www.the-artistic-garden.com

Here's the specific post that's going to get me started making head planters:  http://www.the-artistic-garden.com/hypertufa-planter.html

They suggest using >hypertufa, which I have never used before.  Here's the Wikipedia definition for Hypertufa:  >http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertufa

Here are some recipes for making Hypertufa:  http://www.gardenstew.com/about1779.html

Here's a beginner's recipe:
http://www.the-artistic-garden.com/hypertufa-recipe-beginner.html

Equal portions of

  • Portland cement
  • Perlite
  • Peatmoss
  • Water (just a little less)
Mix until you can form a ball out of it.

Also need:

  • Cooking spray
  • Disposable gloves
  • Styrofoam head>

Pictures of head planters I've found online:

If you don't want to make your own, you might try these:

My living room window

The first step to updating my house was to take down the pictures where my new ones are going to hang.  Then, I had to think about the windows in the front of my house.  I have two bay window seats.  My dogs jump on them and have damaged the woodwork.  They peed on my drapes, so I shortened them.  Not so great . . . This HAS to stop.  So,  I'm going to take out the window seats, create top treatments, and repair the wood .  My original design is this drawing:

I'm thinking of mounting a strip of plexiglass on the front to keep the dogs from jumping up. They're Westies, so they can barely make it now . . .

Chris Madden Plaid Double Waterfall Valance

I have put up a waterfall valance like the one above, but with pleats instead of tassels and a cranberry color. Trying to decide if I like it.  I can still return it.  What do you think?  Any ideas?

Head Planters

Commercial Street in Provincetown, Mass.  (P-Town) is much like Duval Street in Key West,  except maybe a little up-scale.  One thing I saw in some shops, and a few New England yards, was head planters.

I want head planters!!  So I started researching them online.  They're out there. Not a lot. Pretty expensive . . . but adorable!!

So what am I going to do?  I've spent all my money on art . . . and a new window topping for my living room bay window (my Westies insisted on peeing on long drapes, so I had to do something different.)

Well, I am an artist at heart.  So the solution is . . . MAKE HEAD PLANTERS!!  Want to come along on this adventure?  Follow this blog as I hang my artwork, create head planters, and get ready for a gala Christmas party!

I think I should re-name this blog "The Empty Nester."  What do you think?

Back From Vacation: Time for Nesting

We had a wonderful vacation.  We put our son in college. We traveled around New England. We bought art.  And now I'm back home, an empty nester, with two great pieces of art arriving later this week, and I am totally into nesting.

After all the beautiful homes we saw on the East Coast, my home is also beautiful.  We had some work done to our fence while we were gone and now the brick columns look better than any others in the neighborhood.  My hubby will be finally moving back home soon, and my stepson will be graduating from law school, and we're planning a major party for him for December, when our youngest son will be back home as well.  Exciting times!

Last night, I totally rearranged a lot of our existing artwork, and took down what was already where we want our new pieces to hang.  We bought an original Cuban painting that's going over the fireplace and a limited edition John Lennon print for our front hall.  The story behind this print is that John and Sean were visiting the country, lying on the grass near some sheep.  Sean asked his father what sheep saw when they looked at the sky and John answered, "They see themselves . . . meadowing." And when they got home, John created this picture for his son.  My husband and I both instantly fell in love with it.  It's matted and framed and ready to go!  We do need to look at some lighting for it . . .
